PE and Sports Premium at Wymondley

Wymondley JMI School is proud to be an active school that provides an inclusive P.E. curriculum as well as a range of extra-curricular activities. We offer a wide (and changing) range of sports clubs for the children to participate in, including football, girls football, tag rugby, netball, gymnastics, athletics, basketball, tennis, multi-skills clubs, orienteering, mindfulness and yoga sessions. These are supported by a combination of our sports coach, Mr Sinclair, who also delivers part of the PE curriculum each week to every class, parent volunteers and teaching staff. We aim to help our children understand the importance of being active and healthy. Through this and by taking part in so many different forms of physical activity, our hope is that every child will find the sport or physical activity that is right for them and that they will continue with this outside of the school day and we will gladly signpost them to local clubs where they can continue their journey if they so wish.

All year groups from Year 1 upwards take part in the ‘Daily Mile’ at least twice a week and we hold a ‘Walk to School’ week annually to encourage further fitness and to help our children develop a healthy lifestyle. We also offer our Reception and Year 1 children the chance to learn how to ride a bike through the Bikeability Level 1 course and our Year 5 and 6 children the chance to become road confident cyclists through the Bikeability Level 2 and 3 courses.

Our children begin their swimming journey in Reception, so that we can develop water confidence in every child from an early age. This journey continues with swimming lessons in Year 1, 2, 3 and 4 and for those who have not achieved the National Curriculum standard by the end of Year 4, we offer fully subsidised Top Up swimming for children in Year 5 and 6. Through this approach we aim to give every child the best possible chance of achieving this invaluable life skill before leaving primary school.

Our children participate in a range of competitive sporting events both within and beyond school. We hold a Sports Day, which lasts all day and includes competitive and team events as well as fourteen different athletic events for every child to participate in. We also take part in annual events such as tag rugby tournaments, rounders tournaments, the Rural Schools football, netball and athletics rallies and other inclusive events over the year.  We are also a member of the Hitchin Football Association and play in different matches, tournaments and cup competitions over the year. Last year also saw the first time Wymondley was able to field a girl's football team in both a friendly game and a cup game, which was a proud day for us and one we hope to build on in the years to come. Although we are a small school, we believe in giving our children as many sporting opportunities as possible, regardless of how strong a team we are able to field.

We continue to invest in sports-based resources to develop increasing levels of enthusiasm in our children. Our basketball posts and tag rugby posts have been very popular with children, but have also given each of these sports a sense of belonging in the school and raised awareness of the sports for some, while increasing the enjoyment of participating for others. While our summer athletics after-school club regularly has two thirds of the entire school in attendance each week. We are ambitious about sport for our children and will look to increase opportunities, participation and most importantly, enjoyment as we move forwards into the future.
